The Ambassador of Nigeria to the Republic of Benin, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd), has denied either stealing billions of naira while in office as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) or turning properties meant for the Nigerian army to personal use. His Private Counsel, Osuagwu Ugochukwu, in a message in Abuja, yesterday, claimed that the Code of conduct Bureau (CCB) had investigated & cleared the former army chief. According to Buratai, revelations by the Cooperate Affairs Commission (CAC) depicted him as neither a director nor a shareholder in the Nigeria Army Property Limited, describing the claims by some sections of the media as false. The statement reads: “Your publication is nothing but a rehash of a rested subject matter, Dubai Properties. The subject matter, which you hastily tried to re-post to the public, has since over six years been put to rest by the federal authorities. “The CCB, having investigated the matter, cleared Buratai of any wrongdoing and found him not guilty. It also explained the delay in verification of the National Identification Number (NIN), especially for subscribers who were barred after the expiration of the March 30 deadline, as a result of the low capacity of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), which slowed the verification process. Head, Compliance, Monitoring and Enforcement in NCC, Alkasim Umar, at a capacity building workshop for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) reporters in Abuja, clarified that subscribers, who were able to make calls had submitted their NIN for verification and linkage, while those who were barred had not submitted theirs. "The party is solidily behind"

Image
Young Leaders Coalition of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bauchi State chapter, has accused the former Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, of anti-party activities and recommended him for sanction. Chairman of the youth group, Musa Khalid, while submitting the petition to Bauchi APC Chairman, Babayo Misau, alleged that Dogara convened a meeting with some members of the party in Abuja, which the party leadership in Bauchi warned members to boycott. Khalid said: “The meeting was planned in bad faith to destroy the image of our great party. It is, of course, an illegal meeting because any party meeting must be organised through the chairmanship of Adamu Adamu, through the state party. “We wish to state clearly that Dogara is not a party chairman & not a party executive member; rather he is just an elected member of the House of Representatives. His action provokes the party members in Bauchi.” Meanwhile, Misau has assured the angry youths that APC would not u...

It was the first time the rate was in positive territory since September 2014 &came ahead of schedule, with the Riksbank’s most recent assessment from February forecasting a rise in the second half of 2024. “The forecast is that the repo rate will be raised a further two to three times this year & will be somewhat below 2 per cent at the end of the three-year forecast period”, the central bank said in a statement. The global economy was still being affected by “major disruptions” caused by the Covid pandemic, & more recently Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the bank said. Global economic activity was “nevertheless judged to remain good”, the Riksbank added. But high international commodity and shipping prices were expected to lead to high increases in consumer prices “for some time yet”. While monetary po...

IMo state government to compensate victims

Image
Imo State Government has explained that giving compensation to the families of the victims of the Abaezi illegal refinery explosion in Ohaji/ Egbema Local Council of the state is like encouraging a criminal or an armed robber killed in the process. Also, the State Government has given reasons why the governor, Hope Uzodimma, has not visited the site of the incident since Friday night it occurred, maintaining that the governor has dispatched the Commissioners for Petroleum Resources, Chief Goodluck Oprah, and his counterpart in the Health Ministry, Dr Prosper Ohayagha, among other officials, who identified, carried out a mass burial and fumigated the environment. The state government, therefore, questions why some people were confronting the governor with the question of his inability to visit the site, saying it was unnecessary until any time he so desires, insisting that Uzodimma cannot be stampeded into visiting there and celebrating illegality.
