UNITY — A FACTOR FOR NIGERIA'S DEVELOPMENTAL RESILENCE Ishaq Bilal  "Today is Independence Day. The first of October 1960 is a date to which for two years every Nigerian has been eagerly looking forward. At last, our great day has arrived, and Nigeria is now indeed an independent sovereign nation." Those were the words of Sir Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa at the Tafawa Balewa square in Lagos on the 1st of October 1960 when Nigeria broke free from the hold of the British colonial rule. This is one of the greatest achievement that has ever happened in the history of Nigeria. Meanwhile, In the course of struggle to attain independence, we see various capacity elites from different part of the country like Herbert Marcauley, Nnamdi Azikiwe from the east, Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti from the south-west and Ahmadu Bello, Aminu Kano from the north etc. This men fought for the good of this country despite their ethnic diversification to attain a common ...

The Nigerian press and the law

THE NIGERIAN PRESS; FREE OR CASTRATED By Ishaq Bilal The media as often referred to as the fourth estate of the realm, the watch dog of the government, a major stake in the development of every democratic society while carrying out its responsibility of informing, influencing, entertaining and educating through it volatile contents and reach. By implication, it means that the media of any democratic society has the power and capacity of heralding the needed development, correcting the ill practices whether in governance or in the society as well as also help promote practices that can help protect the image of the said society to the outer world. However, in achieving the above, there are already set standards, mode of operation as well as level of responsibility. One of such is its freedom and independence. The level of freedom and independence of the press has always been a subject of discussion and argument all over the world even though that the concept of media freedom and in...

STUDENTS TO SUFFER THE IMPLICATION OF ASUU STRIKE By Ishaq Bilal The Federal Government have insisted on not paying Lecturers salary for the 6 months period that they were on strike. Although while lecturers are also adamant, stressing that they will not call off the strike if their salaries are not paid. The students are however at the receiving end of this tussle between Federal Government and ASUU. Meanwhile, the Educational sector is different from other sectors where a number of days or period missed as well as the supposed work missed, cannot be done again. The Educational sector is one that operates with a define process of semesters and academic sessions. Each of these processes cannot be skipped, which is why even after a long strike, students will still have to continue from where they stopped before going on strike. This is the position of argument of the striking lecturers. But the Federal Government reiteration on not paying the University Lecturers for the...

DISTINCTION BETWEEN FUNKE AKINDELE AND BABAJIDE SANWO-OLU'S FILM INDUSTRY By Ishaq Bilal As a new era heralds with the clamor of youths involvement in politics, the trend has however taking a swipe into what can be referred to as a bandwagon of interests from the Nigerian Entertainment Industry. Well it isn't surprising to see individuals who mirrors the lives, norms, traditions and the way of people, in the society (Nigeria) they live wanting to come into the real field and become politicians. We might as well say that they understands the plight of the people since they impersonate them and tell their story. Meanwhile, with quite a number of them who have made ways into the scene already through appointments or election, like Desmond Elliot who has won the APC primary ticket to run for a seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly for the 3rd time. While some others are also making frantic effort to join the band, the one who seem to have gotten the attention of the public mos...

"I assure you "

THIS GAME PLAYED BY MUHAMMADU BUHARI by Ishaq Bilal This game played by Buhari and his cohorts using human lives as tools to score points needs clarity. The lives of almost every Nigerian have been threatened one way or the other, physically or psychologically by the rate of insecurity in the country. But with Buhari's usual "I assure you'' talk, no longer holding water, as after a speech of I assure you, the next is a bigger hit by either bandits, Boko Haram, ISWAP, Kidnappers. It is so disheartening that one of the Cardinal reason why the man was voted in as the President is the biggest challenge we face now. We've thought that since he was military, those strategies by experience he has gathered will give him an edge over the issues of Insecurities we have but as it stands, these Devils are those with the security expertise and what Baba only does is assures. But when we shout  and our noise is becoming too disturbing, they bring us signs of relief with news wi...

Skills or certificate, which one is the answer?

PRIORITIZING SKILL ACQUISITION OVER CERTIFICATE; A TALK THAT STILL DOES NOT HOLD WATER By Ishaq Bilal The lackluster in the Educational sector in Nigeria have informed the new trend calling for  the youths to prioritize skills acquisition over certificate. The old story which defines the pathway to self sustainability, success and goodlife, pegged as the dividend of Education that is, going to school so as to graduate and get a well paid job has now become the most dangerous advice that can be given to a child and also, said to be a scam which has seem to be so. The Federal Government affirmation thought the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Pantami, of the need for the Nigerian youths to acquire skills as most important to acquiring certificates because of the problem and rate of unemployment confirms the dearth of the Education especially Tertiary Education in this country in providing the youths with a lead to being successful. This as well affirms t...
